What's Konjac?

Porang is the Indonesian name for Konjac (Amorphophallus Oncophylus). Konjac tubers (Amorphophallus Oncophylus) contain a large number of on-absorb polysaccharides with special properties (dietary fiber, gelatinization, intestinal cleansing agent, cholesterol and blood sugar reducing) called Konjacmannan or more precisely glucomannan which is separated into glucose and mannose by hydrolysis. In addition to being in the form of tubers, it can also be processed into the form of konjac chips, konjac flour and glucomannan. It can be used as a basic ingredient for making konnyaku rice, shirataki noodles and other processed food products. In addition, because of its miraculous content, konjac can be used as a raw material for making cosmetics.

Glucomannan is a substance in the form of complex sugars and soluble fiber derived from the root extract of the konjac plant (Amorphophallus Konjac). Glucomannan can actually be found in plant extracts of white pine, higanbana, lily, orchid, hemp, redwood, and suisen. Glucomannan was first used as a traditional herbal medicine and has a long history. The highest source of glucomannan in Indonesia itself, is said to come from the Porang plant. Konjac has a glucomannan content of 45-65%. In food use, glucomannan has excellent water absorption ability and is one of the most viscous dietary fibers of the others in providing a gel effect, until now it is used for thickening, binding, fat replacement, and preservative substitute.
